A data story becomes useful when it connects a signal to a choice. A number alone does not explain why the decision changed.
Reconstruct the decision#
Write the original plan, the evidence that challenged it, an alternative explanation you considered and the action you personally took. A fictional support team might notice repeated handoff tickets and examine whether ownership or staffing caused the delay. Its next step would be to test the explanation before changing the workflow. This is an original rehearsal scenario, not a question reported from any company interview.
Build the follow-up chain#
How was the evidence collected? What would have disproved your interpretation? Who disagreed, and why? What did you measure after the change? Use numbers from your records; describe uncertainty when the measurement does not establish causation. Build your own account in the story map, then try three rehearsal questions. When the evidence was incomplete, explain the decision you could reasonably make with it rather than pretending it was conclusive.
